February 2, 2017 Effective advocacy is localThis week has been a week like no other. A series of Presidential Executive Orders have been signed that, if implemented, will have a significant negative impact on our city, state and the lives of all New Yorkers. From initiating the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, to restricting women’s access to essential health services, to jeopardizing our environment, and to penalizing sanctuary cities by threatening our undocumented children and their families – the President is setting in motion the priorities he articulated throughout his campaign with little concern for the consequences to state and local budgets or the poorest, most vulnerable citizens among us. Importantly, in order to be implemented fully, many of these Executive Orders will require congressional action and legislative and budget decisions. And with this in mind, in addition to peacefully rallying and demonstrating, we encourage you to call New York’s congressional delegation to weigh in when actions are being taken. Engage your federal representatives through calls to and meetings at district offices and consider participating in town hall meetings. Also, we must not lose sight of our responsibility to advance positive change for New York’s children and families by influencing decisions on the state and city level. It’s up to us to ensure their responses to these federal actions protect all New Yorkers; and that the budget and legislative proposals put forth by the Governor and Mayor help make New York a better place for every child and family. And so, we encourage you to get to know your representatives in New York State’s Senate and Assembly, and to stand prepared to call and write them as well as the Governor, when needed. Here in New York City, get to know your New York City Council Member and call and write them as well as the Mayor, the Public Advocate and the Comptroller about your concerns. Engage your Council Member through meetings at district offices or testimony at public hearings scheduled during the upcoming city budget process. New York’s children are relying on all of us to provide them with a strong and steady voice at every level of government, and CCC stands with you and is ready to make our collective voices heard. In the days and months ahead, we’ll be reaching out to ask for your assistance – through call-in days, letter writing campaigns, as well as press conferences and rallies. We will continue to keep you informed of policy, budget and legislative proposals that are being advanced and their potential impact on New York’s children, families and communities. Thank you for caring about New York City’s 1.8 million children, they need you and CCC needs you, now more than ever. Together we seek to ensure that ALL children are healthy, housed, educated and safe. | Comments |
