Statement on Governor Cuomo’s 2017 State of the State AddressReleased January 9, 2017For Immediate Release: January 9, 2017 In response to Governor Cuomo’s State of the State address, Citizens’ Committee for Children released the following statement from Executive Director Jennifer March: “Citizens’ Committee for Children is pleased that Governor Cuomo has advanced numerous proposals in his State of the State Address that would help improve child and family well-being. This includes the Governor’s call to improve outcomes for youth and public safety by raising the age of criminal responsibility in New York to 18. Additionally, the Governor committed to expand after-school programs to 22,000 more children in high poverty communities throughout the state, including the Bronx. We agree with the Governor that we must take steps to address the crisis of homelessness and an MOU between the Governor and the Legislature to release last year’s funding for affordable and supportive housing is an important step. We look forward to seeing these and additional commitments made to children and families, including more resources to combat family homelessness, expand child care access, and invest in child welfare and children’s mental health, in the upcoming State budget.” Citizens’ Committee for Children is an independent multi‐issue child advocacy organization whose mission is to ensure every New York City Child is healthy, housed, educated and safe.
