Background:

Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York (CCC) will provide an overview of the Tenth Edition of Keeping Track of New York City’s Children to more than 200 New York City stakeholders on February 12. Keeping Track is the most comprehensive centralized database tracking the well-being of New York City’s children. The databook includes more than 400 hundred indicators that create a picture of how children, from infancy to adolescence, are faring both citywide, in each borough and in each of the city’s 59 community districts.

Keeping Track 2013 highlights areas where the city’s reform efforts are leading to better outcomes for children and families citywide, as well as areas where children continue to face barriers to well-being, including poverty, food insecurity, unstable housing, and lack of access to essential programs. The data also uncovers how the recession has had an impact on the city’s allocation of resources, particularly among programs serving communities where children’s needs are the greatest. Geographic and population breakdowns shine light on areas where the city is not achieving positive outcomes for children at the community level.

Keeping Track brings front and center the disparities experienced by children in the highest needs communities throughout the city. The city’s advancements in recent years make evident the services and supports that improve long-term outcomes for children and also create measurable savings for the community. As New York City prepares for a mayoral race in 2013, Keeping Track demonstrates the importance of early and targeted investments in the lives of children, as well as the adverse results when investments are not made.
