Film Screening and Panel Discussion: The Apple Pushers

The Apple Pushers, a documentary film narrated by Edward Norton, chronicles the effort by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the City’s Food Policy Coordinator, community advocates and City Council Members to create an innovative approach to bringing healthy foods to food deserts to help address the rise in obesity and diet-related chronic diseases in New York City. Through the NYC Green Cart Initiative, the City approved a new type of street vending permit for vendors specifically selling vegetables and fruits in designated neighborhoods.

CCC, an early champion of the Green Cart Initiative, conducted tremendous advocacy efforts that paved the way for passage of the legislation, which brought produce carts to food deserts across the city.

After the screening, panelists discussed the Green Cart initiative in more detail and answered audience questions on continuing efforts to bring healthy foods to underserved New Yorkers.
