The 2018 Justine Wise Polier Symposium on Family-Centered Approaches to Child Well-being: Building Responsive and Resilient Caregiver/Child Relationships will highlight ways in which child-serving agencies are leveraging innovative parent- and family-centered programming that aims to build positive connections between parents and their children and increases caregiver connections to social supports. Programs featured will include:
Graham Windham’s Family Success Initiative links parents whose children have come into foster care to a Family Coach to help them navigate the system, build social supports, and develop parenting skills and child development knowledge.
Power of 2 provides parent coaching using the Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up (ABC) program to help parents develop the tools they need to break through toxic stress, foster a strong and healthy attachment with their children, and provide their children with the best possible start in life.
Forestdale’s Strong Fathers program works to encourage fathers’ emotional and financial support of their families through job training and placement opportunities and coaching to help fathers learn to bond and play with their children and co-parent with the mothers of their children.
Henry Street’s Parent Center provides caregivers with free workshops and programs designed to foster parent/child attachment, build nurturing family relations, develop young-child socialization and sensory-motor skills, as well as offer peer supports through parent groups, and service referrals and counseling.
The New York Foundling’s Families Rising program is an alternative-to-incarceration program that employs Functional Family Therapy (FFT), bringing a trained therapist into the family dynamic to work closely with the child’s school, family, and community to build a supportive environment while addressing factors that lead to the young person’s arrest.
