CCC’s Policy Briefing, The Impact of the Economic Downturn on Runaway and Homeless Youth, focused on both the challenges of serving the growing population of runaway and homeless youth, in light of several years of budget cuts, and the tremendous amount of effort being made to help these youth.
Unfortunately, the economic downturn has increased the need for runaway and homeless youth services while also reducing resources available to meet their needs. The policy briefing brought together the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (the city agency responsible for the services for runaway and homeless youth) and non-profit service providers working with this population. Speakers talked about:
How budget cuts have impacted the ability of providers to meet the complex needs of runaway and homeless youth.
Services available for homeless youth, as well as service needs.
The importance of preventive services, including a new City initiative to promote acceptance of LGBTQ youth by their families.
