On December 8, Citizens’ Committee for Children will host a policy briefing to discuss important steps underway in New York City to meet the needs of young children in the earliest years of life. The event will take place at the JCC in Manhattan, located at 334 Amsterdam Avenue at 76th Street.
CCC’s Executive Director, Jennifer March, will be joined by special guest, Dr. George L. Askew, Deputy Commissioner for Family and Child Health at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
There are more than half a million children under the age of five in New York City, and almost half are living in or near poverty. Research clearly demonstrates that interventions designed to combat risks to child well-being, many of which are closely linked to living in poverty, are more effective in terms of both cost and outcomes when implemented early in a child’s life. Therefore it is critical that we pay special attention to the conditions surrounding New York City’s youngest children and develop specific strategies to support them.
At this forum we will examine the data related to children ages 0 to 5 in New York City, as well as the opportunities ahead of us to overcome health and development disparities in early childhood and improve outcomes for our youngest New Yorkers.
