Even though studies have clearly demonstrated the health and academic benefits of physical education, New York City’s public schools are substantially out of compliance with the State’s standards. Many public school children are not getting the physical education instruction and time that they need.
CCC’s Policy Briefing, Making the Case for Physical Education in NYC Schools, explored the current status of physical education in New York City’s public schools including:
The proven benefits the research shows regarding the connection between physical education, academic performance and health.
The New York State standards for physical education, and to what extent schools in NYC are meeting those standards.
The barriers to ensuring sufficient physical education opportunities in schools, including space limitations and the shortage of staff.
Innovative approaches currently underway to ensure children have physical education in their schools.
Opportunities for advocacy for the future.
The speakers included:
Dr. Shawn Ladda, Professor of Kinesiology at Manhattan College, and New York City Zone President, New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD)
