Infographic: A Tale of Two Cities: Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 American Community Survey

CCC has created a snapshot of the state of children and families in New York City as told by data from the 2015 American Community Survey. The snapshot includes an infographic and data table highlighting key data points from the survey, citywide and by borough.

The data show that more than 508,000 children live in poverty in New York City. A quarter of these children live in just eight community districts, where the child poverty rate is over 50%. These districts include Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, East Harlem in Manhattan, and several communities in the Bronx.

Median rent in the city has risen more than $2,000 annually since before the 2008 recession, while the median income for families with children is down nearly $3,400 from 2008. Recovery from the recession has been most sluggish in Queens, where median income for families with children is $7,600 lower than in 2008.
