CCC Testimony: The Age of Criminal Responsibility and its Impact in New York State

On February 6, 2017, CCC testified before the New York State Senate Committee on Children and Families and the Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction about the need to raise the age of criminal responsibility in New York this budget session.
CCC’s testimony focused on the brain science research and studies from throughout the country, which have all found that raising the age would improve public safety in New York because it would reduce recidivism. Currently, New York remains one of only two states in the country that treats all 16 and 17 year olds as adults, regardless of the crime they allegedly committed.
