November 13, 2013 YouthAction Updates: Fall 2013With the start of the Fall 2013 YouthAction Community Leadership Course (YCLC) on September 21st, all three YouthAction programs are back in full swing. Through their participation in the YCLC, 26 high school students from across New York City will learn the skills to become effective advocates. They will research issues that affect community health and wellness, develop recommendations for change, and deliver those recommendations to public officials and community leaders. YouthAction Members (YAMs), high school students who have already completed the YCLC, have been busy looking into a variety of issues currently effecting young people in NYC. They have heard from local experts about school food, the controversy around “Stop and Frisk”, youth tobacco use and secondhand smoke, bike safety on city streets, and teen sexual health. In November and December, YAMs will work on a project to raise awareness about obesity and the importance of access to affordable healthy food. Three new Peer Trainers have begun developing the skills they need to design and facilitate workshops for other youth groups interested in learning about advocacy and youth leadership. Peer Trainers are dedicated YouthAction participants who have shown the commitment, public speaking skills, and deep understanding of advocacy needed to pass on their knowledge to peers. Currently, Peer Trainers are have workshops scheduled for YouthBridge NYC, Save Our Streets and multiple cohorts of participants in the Big Brother Big Sister program.
