November 22, 2016 We Can’t Let New York’s Children Down
With the holiday season upon us, we are looking ahead to the new year. As we prepare for a dramatic shift in the federal government’s approach to child and family issues, we’re faced with many uncertainties. Several of the proposals unveiled to date could have a devastating impact on the lives of thousands of New Yorkers, as well as the state and city budgets. Now is the time to make certain that New York’s children and families have CCC’s strong and steadfast voice. Let’s not forget, we know how to do this. New York is home to the largest and most diverse population of children and youth in the country. It has long been a place that champions diversity and protects the vulnerable. We remain proud that our city and state have been at the forefront of efforts to advance policies, legislation and budgets that protect, support and improve the well-being of children and families -i.e. minimum wage increases, paid family leave, child health benefits, universal pre-k, and more. As always, CCC stands ready to support this legacy through our research, community education and advocacy. We will continue to champion the needs of ALL children and in doing so, shine a light on the need for services and supports that improve well-being: early childhood education, after-school and summer programming, safe and affordable housing, healthy affordable food, health and mental health services. We are counting on you to join us in standing up for New York’s children and families and to take action – call, write and meet with elected and appointed officials – when asked. We can’t lose sight of the fact that nearly 30% of New York City children still live in poverty, and with that comes multiple barriers to well-being. We cannot afford any loss of services to these children. We are about to release a new edition of our Community Risk Ranking; and early in the new year we’ll launch new data visualization tools on Keeping Track Online that will allow users to map where risks concentrate across the city’s 59 community districts and identify whether programs, services, and infrastructure exist to address needs and support well-being at the community level. These developments will strengthen our ability to partner with lawmakers, community partners, service providers, and the general public to delve more deeply into the lived experiences of our fellow New Yorkers and to work together to protect services and improve outcomes for children and families. But to maximize our impact and be prepared for the uncertainty that lays ahead, we need your financial support. No matter what faces us in the months and years to come, we are committed to fighting every day to achieve our mission of ensuring that every child is healthy, housed, educated and safe. Our children need us now more than ever. We cannot let them down.
