New Test Scores Show Progress for NYC Public School Students

We at CCC are very pleased that the 2014-15 school year math and English test scores for students in grades three through eight released today show continued progress for NYC’s public school students.

Interestingly, this data is one of the first years that allow for a true comparison of Common Core test scores. The percentage of children whose scores met the English (ELA) proficiency standard increased to 30.4% in 2015, from 28.4% in 2014. These gains were largely driven by the improved performance of 6^th and 8^th graders, whom experienced the highest increase in percentage of students meeting ELA standards. Similarly, more students were found to be proficient in math. In 2015, 35.2% of students were proficient in math, up from 34.2% in 2014. 

As Stephanie Gendell, CCC’s Associate Executive Director for Policy and Government Relations, said in the Mayor’s press release, “We are pleased to see continued progress in the test scores for NYC public school students. We look forward to continuing to work with Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Fariña to build on this success through strengthening and expanding the early childhood education and after-school systems, the growth of community schools, the expansion of school-based health and mental health services, the implementation of universal school lunch and breakfast in the classroom to ensure school children are well-nourished, and the expansion of summer programs that combat summer learning loss.”
