Mayor’s Proposed Budget Can Improve the Lives of NYC’s Children

On May 8, 2014, Mayor de Blasio issued his Executive Budget for Fiscal Year 2015, starting July 1, which updates his Preliminary Budget issued in February. The $73.9 billion budget includes a number of critical investments in programs for children and families.

Some of the notable proposals include:

• Investing $300 million in FY15 and $340 million in FY16 to expand full-day preschool for all 4-year-olds
• Investing $145 million in FY15 and $190 million in FY16 for after-school programs for middle school students.
• Investing $40 million in city funds and $40 million in state funds over the next four years to create a new rental subsidy program for working homeless families.
• Investing $3.4 million to create 100 new shelter beds for runaway and homeless youth.
• Adding 362 ACS staff, as part of Operation SAFE, aimed at lowering caseloads for child protective staff and increasing monitoring.

CCC was pleased to see that many of our Recommendations to Make New York City a Better Place for Every Child were reflected in this budget as key priorities of the new administration.
