February 12, 2013 Keeping Track of New York City’s Children in 2013
There are nearly 2 million children living in New York City. For far too many of them, the cumulative barriers to well-being are great: 1 in 3 children in New York City lives in poverty, 56% of students from low-income families are not reading proficiently by third grade, and 1 in 50 children slept in a shelter last year. Join CCC in speaking out on behalf of New York City’s youngest and most vulnerable residents. CCC recently released the Tenth Edition of Keeping Track of New York City’s Children, the city’s most comprehensive database tracking child well-being. Keeping Track provides a snapshot of child well-being by tracking indicators overtime, and comparing data across geographic and demographic groups. Through this data, we see how investments in primary prevention, such as prenatal care, early childhood education, youth services, and child abuse prevention, produce better outcomes for children, and how lack of these investments hurt children. Sadly, Keeping Track shows great disparities in the well-being of New York City’s children, particularly in communities where children’s needs are the greatest. For example, while the city has seen improvements in education trends in recent years, such as increased reading and math scores, higher graduation rates, and fewer dropouts, the results are not as positive acrosss all racial/ethnic groups and neighborhood school districts. At Citizens’ Committee for Children, our mission is to ensure that every child is Healthy, Housed, Educated and Safe. In order to accomplish this, we must be sure that EVERY child, in EVERY community has access to the fundamental services that support success in school and in life. We must do more to advocate on behalf of children, particularly those whose needs are far too often left behind. Lend your voice to New York City’s Children:
