City Budget Restores Proposed Cuts to Children’s Services

While the Mayor’s Budget had proposed to cut over $210 million of city funding from children’s programs, including the elimination of over 47,000 child care and after-school slots, the City Council was able to negotiate a budget that restored the funding!

On June 26, 2013 the New York City Council voted to adopt the City Fiscal Year 2014 Budget. CCC is grateful for the City Council’s continued commitment to preserving critical services for children and families. The budget essentially restores ALL of the proposed cuts detailed in CCC’s Executive Budget chart. This includes over $60 million for the Out-of-School Time After-School program and over $62 million for child care.

Funding was also restored for many other programs CCC advocated for such as: Runaway and Homeless Youth Services, Beacon programs, child health clinics, mental health services for children under 5, school-based health centers, the suicide prevention hotline, Teen RAPP (Relationship Abuse Prevention Program), and child advocacy centers. In addition, the proposal to raise the price of school lunch from $1.50 to $2.50 was significantly improved by only increasing the price to $1.75.

Unfortunately, almost all of these restorations are for one year only. This means that unless the next administration takes steps to end the budget dance, all of these programs are services are once again at risk next June. CCC, along with the Campaign for Children and other advocacy coalitions will be working hard to end the budget dance!
