April 9, 2013 April is Child Abuse Prevention Month! It is a great time to remember all of the resources we have in New York City to help keep children safe, to thank all of the New Yorkers who work so hard every day to protect our city’s children, and to remind YOU that you too can play a role in keeping children safe! In New York City, there are approximately 60,000 reports of child abuse or neglect each year. In February 2013, almost 26,000 children were receiving preventive services and just under 13,000 children were in foster care (an all-time low!) Thousands of people in the City’s Administration for Children’s Services, the State Office of Children and Family Services, New York City’s over 100 preventive service programs, and over 30 foster care agencies, lawyers and judges in Family Court, and countless other social service agencies spend each and every day keeping children safe – we at CCC thank you for all that you do! Remember – each and every one of us has a role in keeping children safe! If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, you can make a report by calling 311. The City has preventive service programs aimed at keeping children safe in their homes, in every community in every borough. You can find one in your neighborhood here. The City’s child welfare agency has some great educational resources on how to keep children safe, including this great video on safe sleeping for infants. There are also many national resources available. Read more about Child Abuse Prevention Month in Governor’s Cuomo’s Proclamation and President Obama’s Proclamation. | Comments |
